PSU-Wellsboro-Allegheny Natl Forest (June, 2022)

  • Saturday – Headed up to David and Nanako’s house, arrived around 2PM, dinner there, and then we headed to a concert at PSU in which Emily was performing. We stayed up late looking at David and Nanako’s photos of their Lake Como – Rome trip.
  • Sunday – Got up early, breakfast at David and Nanako’s house, then headed to the trail I planned to hike (Stone Trail Loop). I had a hard time finding the trailhead listed on AllTrails (I had forgotten to download the Google map of the area, and had no connection), and spent an hour or so looking. When I found another access point to the trail, I decided it was too late to start the hike, so I drove into Wellsboro and checked in to the motel (Canyon Motel) earlier than planned. The motel wasn’t appealing from the outside, but the room was very nice (large room with spa tub and shower), and the place had an indoor pool and sauna. After a brief rest I drove to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania and hiked the tourist trail to the river (4 miles out and back). After the visit, I returned to the motel, took a shower, rested briefly, and then headed out to dinner. Wellsboro is a charming little town, with lots of lovely homes and a nice main street with theaters, restaurants, etc. Most of the restaurants were closed on Sunday, but Harland’s was open, thankfully (great Reuben sandwich and homemade chips).
  • Monday – Up early, grabbed a breakfast sandwich at McDonald’s, then drove about 2.5 hours to the Allegheny Natl Forest. Similar to Sunday, I had a hard time finding the trailhead, but found it in time to do a very nice hike (Minister Creek Trail). I saw very few people on the trail, and wrapped up the 6.5 mile loop in about 3 hours. The upper part of the loop was a segment of the North Country Trail (a 4800 footpath, the longest in the U.S.). Headed back to Wellsboro after the hike, then back to Harland’s for dinner.
  • Tuesday – Harland’s for breakfast, then headed home, getting back around noon, in time to see the congressional January 6th committee hearing.
